Ontario Public Library Association Honours BPL Librarian

A large group of Barrie Public Library staff smile at the camera. They are all pointing to one staff member, Serena McGovern, who sits in the middle. She is wearing a balloon crown. They are all smiling.

We're thrilled to announce that Serena McGovern, our Children’s Services Librarian, was recently named the Children and Youth Librarian of the Year by the Ontario Public Library Association! The award honours a children’s librarian who has made a positive impact on children’s or youth services in the community, while also improving the work experience of their colleagues.

Serena has been with BPL for 11 years, and has accomplished so much in this time!

Spring Book Sale Raises Funds for BPL

Our Spring Book Sale this past weekend was a massive success!

Thank you to everyone who supported the sale. Book lovers of all ages enjoyed searching through the many tables of pre-loved items in pursuit of new titles to add to their home collection. We also had gently used DVDs, CDs, and video games.

The sale raised $4,033, which will support the advancement of library services and future branches.

June is National Indigenous History Month

Every June, Canada celebrates National Indigenous History Month. While this is an opportunity to honour the rich and diverse cultures, voices, experiences and histories of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people, it is important to recognize how far Canada still has to go in repairing relationships with Indigenous nations.

This June, we encourage Canadians to take part in learning and educating themselves on the strength, contributions, and sacrifices of Indigenous Peoples.

Featured Programs:

  • Indigenous Storytime - Thursday, June 15, 10-10:30am, Downtown. Join us for some traditional songs and stories where we learn about Indigenous history and culture.
  • Storytelling Through Song - Saturday, June 24, 1-5pm, Downtown. Join us for teachings on the 7 Grandfathers followed by storytelling through song.
